Aim and Purpose of the International Federation MDE
The International Federation >Masters of the Art of Bookbinding< is an affiliation of creative bookbinders. It was founded in Berlin in 1923.
The aim of the federation is to bring together all the creative forces which produces technically and artistically superior work in the field of bookbinding in order to carry on the tradition of artistic binding and to attain recognition among lovers of books.
Exhibitions of binding show works with the most varied materials fashioned to the highest standards of craftsmanship. What is notables is a concern for form, colour and design which attempt to harmonize with the content and typography. These exhibitions offer colleagues an opportunity for comparison and stimulation as well as encourage young colleagues to emulate these high standards.
An intimate exchange of experience and a good working relationship with all organizations devoted to the book arts are strived for.
The personal contact between colleagues is cultivated by means of circulars and annual meetings which are held in different locations. The basic programme offers an opportunity for lectures and common explorations in the field of the book.
